White Pony Express was not founded to fight climate change. We were founded on something more personal — a belief that community is built through acts of service, and that sharing abundance with our neighbors is simply the right way to live.
Our model and values call us to see one human family, to serve with love rather than charity, and to be the change we’re delivering — not waiting for the world to become more just but living that way now. Food recovery is the vehicle through which we express those values every single day.
This past week, that work was recognized far and wide, with features on Kron 4 News as well as in The Richmond Standard, The Press.net, 24/680, and The Diablo Gazette. These stories brought welcome visibility to the work our volunteers and partners do every day — connecting 12,500 pounds of surplus food to over 10,500 free community meals.
As it turns out, WPE’s delivered-with-love model also has significant environmental consequences. Since 2013, WPE’s food recovery work has prevented 893.8 tons of methane — a greenhouse gas 80+ times more potent than CO2 — from entering our atmosphere, mitigated 56,741 metric tons of CO2e, and saved 29.34 billion gallons of water. These outcomes aren’t why we do this work. They are evidence of what becomes possible when a community commits to wasting nothing and caring for everyone.
