Volunteer Spotlight: Henry Werner’s Journey to Action

Taking the first step can be the hardest. This month, we’re spotlighting Henry Werner, whose journey from volunteer to advocate shows what “all of us” truly means.

After learning about the scope of food insecurity in Contra Costa County, Henry felt called to act. His advocacy led him from weekend volunteer shifts and local gleaning efforts to speaking up at a Board of Supervisors meeting.

“When Supervisor Andersen opened the floor, I swallowed my nerves and went up first,” Henry shared.

That courage paid off. His testimony helped secure a $50,000 allocation for White Pony Express—and earned him a personal shout-out from the Supervisor.

For Henry, service is about staying grounded amid life’s fast pace. His advice to anyone hesitant to begin?

“Just go for it. When I started facing things head-on and figuring it out along the way, I began progressing faster than ever!”
