Jill lives in a low-income senior housing community where White Pony Express delivers groceries every week. Over the past two years, she’s noticed something about her neighbors.
“I’ve seen members that live here get healthier because I know they don’t have much money for food,” she says. “I have actually seen them over the last two years regain their health.”
You won’t find that on most annual reports. You should.
In food relief, success is usually measured by weight: pounds distributed, meals served. We track those too. Last year, Team Pony rescued the equivalent of 4.2 million meals for 135,000 neighbors through 144 nonprofit partners and 2,000 volunteers. But on a scale, a pound of wilted lettuce weighs the same as a pound of fresh organic berries. A meal that fills a stomach counts the same as one that helps someone get well.
Here’s what the numbers miss: our community doesn’t have a food shortage. Grocers, farms, and restaurants have plenty of good food that would otherwise go to waste. Hunger here is a logistics problem. Solving it well means moving the right food, quickly, with care.
So everything that comes through our doors faces one simple test: Would I serve this to my own family?
That question shapes the whole operation. It’s why volunteers sort with care, keep food cold, and get it to partners within hours. It’s why our four values aren’t wall decor. Respect means neighbors receive the food we’d choose for ourselves. Selfless Service means showing up seven days a week. Appreciation means honoring every donor, driver, and sorter who makes that possible. Collaboration means trusting our partners, who know their communities better than anyone.
The need isn’t slowing. Grocery costs remain high, and our partners are seeing more neighbors every month. Our 2027–2029 Strategic Plan commits us to grow, and to never let growth dilute quality, reliability, or heart.
Bigger isn’t the goal. Better is.
