WPE’s mission is to end hunger and poverty by delivering the abundance all around us to those in need – with love. Operating 7 days a week, our Food Rescue Program recovers a daily average of 12,000 pounds of high-quality food from grocers, farmers markets, restaurants, and wholesalers. Food is carefully sorted and delivered by volunteers and staff in refrigerated vehicles the same day it is received to 98 nonprofit service providers. There is never any charge for WPE’s healthy food deliveries.
Starting as an unfunded, grassroots effort by local residents, White Pony Express has developed into one of California’s largest food recovery programs, known far and wide for our open arms, responsive service, and fresh, nutritious food deliveries. WPE has delivered 27 million pounds of high-quality food – the equivalent of over 22 million meals – that would have otherwise gone to landfill.
WPE launched an innovative, app-based surplus food collection and distribution system for smaller, more frequent donations. Food donors simply signal when they have excess and food runners receive a notification via the app and can elect to pick it up and deliver it to a matching food recipient organization. It’s like Uber for food recovery!
