On Wednesday, August 27th, White Pony Express staff and volunteers experienced a 5-star culinary event: an elaborate tasting of authentic Afghan delicacies, lovingly prepared and shared by the Islamic Center of Contra Costa. The celebratory gathering brought us together for a rich exchange of tastes, perspectives, and shared values.
The buffet featured a colorful, mouth-watering array of traditional dishes that showcased the rich flavors and culinary artistry of Afghan cuisine. The features included Eye Khahom (Afghan dumplings), tender lamb and potatoes, and red beans in a flavorful sauce.
Quaboli, a classic Afghan rice dish layered with raisins, carrots, and tender pieces of meat, was a favorite among attendees. To conclude the meal, all were treated to sweet and creamy rice pudding.
Members of the Islamic Center and their families prepared and served the generous meal. We are appreciative of their generosity of time and spirit—for preparing a flavorful selection of dishes, and for taking time to share stories and the cultural significance behind the food we enjoyed.
This event went beyond sharing a meal—it was a celebration of the unity we find in diversity. We’re reminded of the way a shared meal can bring people together in warmth and solidarity and look forward to more opportunities like this to connect, share, and celebrate with friends and neighbors in the future.
