This spring, White Pony Express was invited to present to the California Department of Education’s Nutrition Services Division, and we didn’t take that lightly.
Our message was simple: schools are not just places where children learn. They are among the most powerful community institutions we have. And when they choose to recover surplus food rather than waste it, they don’t just feed families — they model for an entire generation what it looks like to take care of each other.
State leaders listened. In the days that followed, we received a groundswell of calls from schools requesting food pickups and asking how to bring WPE’s School Pantry Program to their campuses. That response told us everything.
WPE works with schools in both directions: (1) picking up surplus food to meet California’s SB 1383 recovery requirements and (2) delivering groceries via pop-up markets where families shop for free — no paperwork, no barriers, no questions asked.
Last year alone, schools donated 103,961 pounds of food, while our School Pantry Program delivered the equivalent of 764,103 meals. These aren’t pilot programs. They are proof of concept — and California is paying attention.
Dr. Conner believed that when enough people commit to giving their very best, without thought of reward, the world changes. Our schools are proving her right. And now, the state is taking notes.
