By the end of this month, student volunteers will have decorated 5,000 stars by hand. On the back of each is one simple wish from a neighbor: a warm coat, diapers, or a toy to open during the holidays.
The Star Program began five years ago with Mandy, White Pony Express’ longtime Volunteer Coordinator. Since then, it has become a beloved annual tradition. Last year alone, our community provided nearly 5,000 new winter essentials and gifts.
“We chose stars so volunteers could make each one individual and special,” Mandy said. “So it would be done with love.”
That artwork has become part of the magic. Pictures and personal messages catch someone’s eye. Then they turn the star over, discover what is needed, and choose to help.
Now, we need businesses, faith communities, and teams to decorate their trees, mantels, and tables with the stars. There is no minimum. A group can adopt five or 500. If a location runs out, Mandy will gladly send more.
Every gift reaches a neighbor through shelters, community distribution sites, and White Pony Express School Pantries across Contra Costa County. Last year, Mandy met a parent who had just received warm coats for two young children.
“It’s special when people feel cared about,” she said, “and receive something they truly want and need.”
All items must be new and should be returned by Friday, December 11. Gifts may be dropped off at 2470 Bates Avenue in Concord, or you may contact us to arrange a pickup.
