There was no better way to mark the milestone than by doing what we do every day – sharing abundance, neighbor to neighbor.
Together with Kaiser Permanente, WPE welcomed 200 families from 20 local nonprofit partners. Volunteers packed and distributed 5,075 pounds of fresh groceries and more than 2,500 personal care items and children’s gifts – all free, with no forms and no questions asked.
“Extraordinary things are possible when we commit to the shared belief that every one of us belongs to one human family,” said WPE CEO Eve Birge. “This is more than a giveaway. It’s a celebration of a community showing up for itself, with love at the center.”
Antioch Mayor Ron Bernal highlighted something central to WPE’s approach: quality matters. “This is a great way to address not just food insecurity but having quality food for people,” he said, “because that’s really the missing element.”
Councilmember Tamisha Torres-Walker, a longtime WPE partner, put it another way: “White Pony Express has always showed up and showed out and made sure our families had what they needed.”
And that need is growing. Antioch families are facing higher grocery costs, changes to CalFresh, and household budgets stretched thinner than ever. At the same time, good food is still going unused throughout our region.
White Pony Express exists to bring those two realities together.
Thirty-two million meals isn’t just our milestone. It belongs to every food donor, volunteer, community partner, supporter, and neighbor who has made this work possible.
Here’s to the next million – recovered with care, shared freely, and delivered with love.
